Like the patron saint of the 1980s, Karin Ström brilliantly recasts generic synths into fairly intriguing electropop instrumentals. However, despite creating engaging a backing for her poppy crystalline vocals, the two never jell, making new album "Fantomhalvan" more an exercise in Eurovision Song Competition showmanship then cohesive music-making. Tracks such as "Hackney Downs" and "Tills fulheten stillar vårt blod" momentarily spark a bit of playfulness, but overall the listener is left wonder how Ström's misguided attempt at self-production actually happened.
Admittedly, my inability to attach to Ström's work could be due in part to my inability to speak Swedish. While she is kind enough to provide linguistically handicapped listeners with translations on her website, something -- quite literally -- is lost in translation. Content without form, we get an endless parade of jilted lovers, bitter memories, and nights spent alone. Reading, rather than hearing, the deluge of half-baked metaphors is not unlike taking an illicit peak into a friend's secret poetry notebook -- sure you feel for the girl, but ultimately, it's a bit too embarrassing to acknowledge.

Things that I learned during the 00's

01. Making music is more about discovering than inventing.
02. Making lasagna is just too much hassle. Even if it turns out really good.
03. If you're homesick in LA, look at the palm trees.
04. Lee Miller was an incredibly cool chick.
05. Luck is crucial. Which can be frustrating but also make life unpredictable and exciting.
06. Don't choose the shortest line in the supermarket, study the cashiers and see who's the fastest.
07. Few things measure up to having oysters and wine at Smith & Mills with your love.
08. Producing music while having foot care is a great combo.
09. Havana is the most beautiful city in the world.
10. Life has no meaning to us but we have a meaning to life. Which is carrying genes through time. Sometimes it's fun, sometime it's not. Just like any other day job.

---------------------------
Karin Ström's new album "Fantomhalvan" comes out January 20. The first single "Hon som älskade dig" will be out any day now, as soon as it gets up on Spotify.

Top ten things to do a Sunday in Greenpoint this autumn:

01. Have breakfast on the stoop while reading The New York Times. Lovely way to start getting to know your neighbours better. Especially old people like to talk to you as they pass by.

02. Walk down to Brooklyn Label on Franklin for brunch. Sometimes you have to wait for up to 45 minutes, but it's worth it! And you can walk down to the riverside and admire the Manhattan skyline when you've put down your name on the list. Always order the burger.

03. Take the B61 down to Red Hook. Alleviate homesickness by stocking up on Swedish candy at IKEA. Go windowshopping for kitchy postwar antiques at Atlantis. Have an immaculate margarita at Alma's terrace overlooking downtown's scrapers.

04. Walk down to the Gutter Bar, have a Brooklyn Lager and bowl a few rounds. Forget about the points and focus on how nice the rented shoes look.

05. Take a walk to Calvary Cemetery in Queens and look at all the white graveyard scupltures. It's one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the US and many mobsters are buried here. Eerie but beautiful.

06. Make a giant lasagna.

07. Take the bikes down to Fort Greene. Watch the kids play in the park, have a coffee at Bittersweet, check out the flea market at Lafayette, walk to BAM and see if the cinema is showing any nice old classic.

08. Go down to McCarren park and stock up on vegetables at Farmer's Market. Go down to the track, look at the joggers and take pleasure in the fact that you're not running. Buy coffee at Urban Rustic and sit down on a bench.

09. Take the subway to Times Square, get tickets to a movie and eat at Texas BBQ. The portions are enormous even by American standards and the prices are a steal. And the cornbread!

10. Stay in all day and watch downloaded TV-series and YouTubed talk shows and eat pizza in bed.

---------------------------
Karin Ström has been spending her autumn in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where she has started to produce her second album in her portable home studio - laptop, MIDI keyboard and microphone. Sundays she has made sure to have off, however.

The tracks on the new Sophie Rimheden album with all the guest spots from Sweden's current crop of "hot" rappers (Adam Tensta, Form One, Aaron Phiri, etc.) only serve to distract from the better tracks on the album that are all her own. Actually, that's not 100% true as the lead single "Go away" is dece, but I really do like her own solo tracks best. Case in point: "Happy". Fun like a carnival, sharp like cheddar and, uh, infectious like a cold. Or something like that. Anyhow, it does what it needs to do which is attempt to reinforce Rimheden's place as Sweden's reigning electropop queen. A couple years ago she had that honor down solid, these days competition is fierce - Firefox AK and Karin Ström ain't no slouches. Watch your back!

My 10 best moments this year related to musicmaking.

01. When I woke up the day after my record was released and was very happy and felt a strong urge to cut a fringe. So I went to the hair dresser and did that. The fringe became the symbol of the post-album debut me. It felt great.

02. When I made my first national TV performance and was so nervous I thought I should fall over, as my legs were literally shaking and I had been stupid enough to wear high heels. I thought to myself "come on Karin, this is what you always dreamt of". Then all of a sudden I was calm. AND from that day, I was completely cured of stage fright. (You can see the clip here)

03. When I got an e-mail from my friend saying "Karin - you are now a national radio artist", when Betydelsen av Rum had entered the P3 playlist. I screamed out loud.

04. When Håkan Lidbo e-mailed me and asked if I wanted to participate in "Ny musik för landssorg" (New music for national grief and mourning) as one of the country's most exciting electronica producers. I've never been so flattered in my life.

05. Every single time somebody has written to me via MySpace or my website or written in their blog that my music means something to them.

06. When I saw the video to "Klaustrofobi" the first time and was so happy Tobias Annerhult had understood exactly what kind of video I wanted without me even saying it. The beauty of art can sometimes be almost telepathetic.

07. When I played my premier gig at Berns for the Fashion loves music loves fashion tour and had four bottles of champagne as my fee and my ex-boyfriend ended up proposing (not that I took it seriously for one second and I had to remind him of it the next day). (view a picture from the show)

08. Every time I've been sitting by the piano writing a song and felt, yes, this could be something.

09. When Absolut e-mailed me, wanting me to contribute to their web campaign. A new video and song (in English) is to be released on their website in the beginning of next year.

10. Every songwriting session with Juvelen. He's hilarious and we have so much fun when we hang out I wonder if that duet will ever be finished!

---------------------------
Karin Ström is currently finishing her third novel and writing songs for her next album. She was recently featured on Jacque C's "Monkey man" and is also working on a number of other smaller projects such as a duet with Juvelen and a collboration with Absolut Vodka (as mentioned above).

This is a very beautiful album, with a perfect balance between Karin Ström\'s voice and the understated electronics creating accomplished electro-pop songs. Ström is certainly talented, there\'s no doubt about it. Musically, \"En saga om en sten\" shows Ström exploring computer instruments to create an upbeat base to which her vocals add a touch of ethereal elegance, much like a Swedish Imogen Heap. Looking up the lyrics on her website (thankfully in both Swedish and in English), the poetics compliment just the sort of music she is making. Absorbing, thoughtful - if the stories of heartbreak get a little too familiar. But I get the feeling she is scared to go all out with her songs. Nothing stands out on the album for me, although there are a fair few catchy numbers. I like this album, but I don\'t love it. It will be the next album that everyone takes notice of. She should be more experimental, less afraid to really explore the electronics and demonstrate her vocal talent.

Karin Ström's debut full-length album "En saga om en sten" came out this week, thus completing her transformation from mediocre folkie to electropop queen. That's how I see it anyway. She's come a long way from her humble beginnings as a singer/songwriter on Nettwork Records, living in LA and making a go at the so-called American dream. She had potential to go further down that path, but it didn't work out and I think that's for the best. Besides, Karin Ström is far more interesting as an electronic artist, singing in her native Swedish. Her DIY reinvention makes for a better story, too. The world can always use more smart, indepedent artists like this.
